Well everyone, it's that time of year again. Spanish wells is a ghost town once again. The enormous fishing fleet from Spanish Wells is out of town as of today. We're all looking for a good season this year. El-Nino' is a little farther south again this season and from recent history this favors the craw fishing season. Let's hope it's a repeat from the last occurrence of El Nino'. On another positive not for El Nino', that last time it drifted this far south the number of hurricanes were also fewer. Let's all pray to this end. From all the fishermen to all of you, enjoy a well seasoned plate of lobster in honor of our fishing industry her in the Sunny Bahamas.

Blooming June

All the rains have made a beautiful transformation here on our Islands. The much needed rain has made the brown grass green and the flowers have accumulated all their colours. Of course, all of this will make those once drear properties, beautiful, and presentable to the buyers who are wishful for their beauty.

Oh, and all this rain...makes the CRABS crawl. A much desired delicasy of the natives, the land crab. They "stop up" their holes in the winter and come out at the first rains of spring.

Not to say we gone fishin' too. There are a few boats that reap from the sea from moon to moon. What I sayin'...? The fish school with the moon and the knowledgeable fisherman know this. We all know that the boats come into Potter's Cay on Good Friday, but the real fishing news is in the moon. If you are interested, write me a note or call and we could chat about it...

Well, looks like more rain today, the Showers Of Blessing. Be careful of those low spots that have a tendancy to flood...

The Lobster Season's Finale'

Well everyone, the lobster season has come to an end, and the Summer begins. This, as I understand, is one of those five years that some of the other World Lobster markets are also open. This means the price on the market is much more tolerable for the not so high-enders.

Needless to say, it does affect the fisherman here in the Bahamas, but it makes the product of seafood more desireable at times like these. I've heard the fisherman on a whole have had a pretty good catch, some even to venture to say as many or more lobster than last year. So at the end of the season there are lobster to eat. But...the price hasn't been as good as expected. And in todays economy that's less desireable.

We'll look for a better price come August, and hopefully an even better catch.

Although it's still a little cool and the beaches are a little bare, it doesn't change the fact that we live in one of the best summertime vacation spots in the world. The Bahamas has a great variety of pleasures for the vacationers. It also has some of the greatest Real Estate adventures of our time. Not far from the US, the Bahamas is an easy travel spot. The many hosts of the Bahamas can be easily accessed to help you find the right spot for your vacation or your Summer Home.

The Lobster Season is almost Over!

And so it's the middle of March now and the lobster season is nearly over. Many of the fishing vessels make a very short mid-trip escape home to rejuvenate their bodies and their fuel tanks. If there are any minor repairs to be done this would also be the time to get it done. They usually off-load any catch they have to their local buyer.

Then a couple of days rest and it's back to the fishing grounds to finish off what they started all the way back in August.

The photo shows one of the fishing trawlers that has the distinguished design of many of the lobster vessels that birth here at Spanish Wells in the Bahamas. They accomodate a full 7-9 man crew(or sometimes more) with all the perks of being at home, (besides the wife, of course), and are able to stay out to sea for extended periods of time. Some often venture out for more than 4 weeks from time to time and travelling as far as Cay Lobos, which borders the Gulf Stream across from Cuba. On a clear night you can see the transient sea-going ships in the passage and oft times you can see the repetitive glare of the Cuban Lighthouses.

The extraordinary efforts wiil soon pay off to those hard working fishermen. And be sure there'll be another post to let you know how enthused the guys were about this season...

Lobster Fishing

Although it looks quiet and serene here, this is not the case. Almost all of the thirty-some fishing vessells are out to sea trying their best to make up for any lost time this lobster season. The season runs from Aug. 1st through March 31st. This time of year sometimes becomes hectic, with rusty weather and the soon closing season. It may seem like there's a whole month ahead, but with many things that can go wrong everyone is trying to make the best of the time they have.

Nassau/Spanish Wells Travel Information

If you are coming through Nassau to Spanish Wells you have a couple of choices for travel. Of course you can fly from Nassau to North Eleuthera and then trace the route from the previuos post or you can come by Water Ferry. The most prominent Water Ferry is the BohengyII. This is a luxury Ferry that runs each day from Nassau to Spanish Wells and on to Harbour Island and then back the same way to Nassau. You can get departure times and travel information and prices from www.fastferries.com. Sea Life Bahamas Limited(242)333-4890 is the Agent for Fast Ferries on Spanish Wells. You can get travel information for All the Fast Ferry runs from them too. Also the mail boat comes to Spanish Wells weekly. The Eleuthera Express travels from Nassau to Spanish Wells every thursday morning. They bring passengers and freight for Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. They make other runs to other parts of Eleuthera through the early part of the week... So there's a couple of different ways to get to Spanish Wells...As a last thought, You could Charter a vessel from Nassau to bring you to Spanish Wells from Nassau. North Eleuthera/Spanish Wells Travel Information

Many people want to know about Spanish Wells. One of the many questions I get is "how far is Spanish Wells from Mainland Eleuthera and how do I get there". This is a very good question. Upon entering North Eleuthera Airport you can inquire about a taxi that can bring you to Jean's Bay. This is where you would want to go to get a water taxi to Spanish Wells. Pinder's Taxi Service is a Designated taxi for Spanish Wells. They travel to and from the airport regularly each day. If you choose another one of the courteous taxi drivers to bring you tpo Jean's Bay, there's always another water taxi to bring you over. Spanish Wells Ferry runs all day long for frequent travel back and forth to Mainland Eleuthera. It's about a 10 minute drive from the airport. And it's quite the scenic route. You will see a few of the newer homes on Eleuthera along with some of the local farms that are there also. As you view the scenery the Caribbean sea almost jumps out to you as you approach Jean's Bay dock. When you get to Jean's Bay, you will get on the Water Taxi and continue your journey across the beautiful waters to Spanish Wells. This ride is only a few moments... and then you're Here.
